The fitting fully reinforces the opening in the header pipe per ASME piping codes. The intention of the shape is to relieve stress at branch intersection where fatigue may occur due to cyclic loads. Inserting the fitting directly into the header pipe provides solid foundation with significantly low weld volume. They can be manufactured with butt-weld, socket-weld or threaded-end connections.
