American Cast Iron Pipe Co. recently completed an $80 million melt shop expansion at its Birmingham, Ala.-cast iron and steel pipe mill, considered the largest pipe casting plant in the world, according to Industrial Information Resources, Inc. IIR described it as a 2,100-acre site, almost three miles long and with 60 acres of plant under roof.
