Industrial Information Resources tracked 85 industrial plant closings in the 3rd quarter of last year, compared with merely 36 openings. Hardest hit sector was manufacturing, which lost a net 42 facilities. Chemical companies closed 12 facilities while opening none. On the plus side, there were 27 power plant start-ups and no closings, while the food and beverage industry opened nine plants and closed only one.
