John Ward, 83, died Oct. 18 after a battle with cancer. A past president of the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors - National Association (1987-1988), he was known for his Southern drawl introduction at PHCC events that he was “John Ward, Raleigh, North Carolina.” According to PHCC's history book, “The Heritage Unique,” along with his business and management expertise, John Ward also was well known for his “calling card.” He would present a $2 bill to new acquaintances, accompanied by a
description of what public figures were pictured on the front and back of the bill and his own name and address. He was a World War II veteran and one of the founders of Watco Corp. Memorial donations may be made in his name to a need-based scholarship fund that Ward initiated while serving as scholarship chair of the PHCC Educational Foundation.
