ASSE Urges Voters to Support IRC Fire Sprinkler Requirements
According to the American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE), the
National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has submitted proposals to rescind
home fire sprinkler requirements from the International Residential Code (IRC).
The ASSE believes that these efforts by NAHB disregard the demonstrated value of
sprinklers in saving lives and reducing human suffering associated with
residential fires. “To protect the public and firefighters, we must once again
stand tall by opposing these changes,” said Rich Prospal, ASSE International President.
As the 2009-2012 IRC development cycle is underway, ASSE is urging supporters of residential fire sprinklers to spread the word and vote at the International Code Council’s upcoming hearing on Oct. 28, 2009, in Baltimore, MD. However to vote, attendees must become an ICC member before Oct. 14 (if not already a member), and must be present at the Baltimore hearing.
If the vote is lost, this places the IRC sprinkler requirements at risk of being removed from the 2012 code at ICC's final action hearing next year.
